A very big Thank You

Since the soundtracks have been posted on FFShrine and Yahoo BR groups I would just like to say a very big thank you on behalf of the EMS team for all the words of support. Me, Jack and DC are pleased with the reception the EMS Definitive Edition has received. This is what spurred us on to do this set in the wake of the release of the original EMS in 2010. A special thank you goes to all the fellow BR soundtrack enthusiasts who have been kind enough to share their work with the rest of us and graciously given permission for us to use their work from both private and public collections. As I've mentioned before once DC and Jack have finished their own projects and my workload lessens, we will turn our attention to Antarctica. We hope to make a special expanded soundtrack for this oft overlooked work by Vangelis.

   Notes :

2011 started with the release of Blade Runner: EMS Recombination; a team
effort to create a Blade Runner soundtrack as clean as possible, without F/X
and dialogue for fans to enjoy. On its release the soundtrack was well
received, spawning numerous other compilations. However the work didn't stop
   there.

For the lossless release, the EMS Team wanted to offer something a little
different and not just repackage the original version. Changes were made to
the running order and tracks were reworked as other sources were found.
Extended versions of "At Mr. Chew's" and "Desolation Path" were created along
with new tracks "Waiting For Zhora" and "Memories Of Green/Blade Runner
Blues". With the help of some new friends, the EMS Team are proud to
present for the first time a clean version of "Thinking Of Rachel".

Blade Runner EMS Recombination is an own attempt to create a Best of
soundtrack from all the available bootlegs of Vangelis' superb score.

The selection criteria was very simple: find the pieces that represented the
film score in their cleanest (without dialogue and sfx as much as was
possible) versions and be of the best available sound quality. It kept most
of the titles of the source tracks only changing a few as some had some
obscure titles not immediately obvious to the wider audience.

I hope you enjoy listening as much as I did while making this compilation

Tyrell: We've already tried it: Ethly Methane Sulfonate is an alkylating

dead before he left the table

Get ready for the new mutation...

To all our friends who have been patiently awaiting this release. As Jack has  previously posted, which I hopefully won't need to repeat verbatim, enjoy these discs responsibly. This is the result of a lot of hard work, especially from DC and Jack and I would hate to see this exploited for unscrupulous commercial gain.

10. Ogi no Mato [The Folding Fan as a Target] (Full length version) 10.42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Notes :

Some of the tracks presented here are essentially (re)assemblages of elements buried in the official view/mix of the movie, enhanced for the listener with soundtrack, audio effects and narration to place the cues in their cinematic context; the flute music and percussion piece being an extreme example of this more cinematic approach to the soundtrack. The rest of the tracks were remixed from the original audio streams to add extra aural details on the japanese cues. There might be some debate as to whether some of this is part of Vangelis' original compositions for the movie, or just someone else's creation. A couple of cues were finally uncovered and included here, thanks to the input of 1187hunterwasser and Kazushi Kimura of the Blade Runner fan network. The rest are part of an ongoing search, which one day may come to a conclusion and expand the Blade Runner soundtrack catalogue further.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comments :

One of the aspects of the multicultural melting pot portrayed in Blade Runner was the influence of far eastern culture in the daily life of 2019 Los Angeles. From the Chinese food vendors of the White Dragon noodle bar, through the Cambodian sales lady on Animoid Row, right up to the Shimata Dominguez Corporation sponsorship of the off world colonies. Pervading all of this was the music of the far east, whether blaring out from an animated billboard or drifting down from on high from the ever present advertising blimp. Of the pieces played, “Ogi No mato” is the most widely known among the fans, in a mainly truncated version. There were other pieces played and not always as conspicuous. Last year when one of the tracks was identified through the fan network as “Chidori no Kyoku”, the EMS team members began a search of various sources to identify which version of this track was used.
The most likely candidate was a performance by Michio Miyagi. The second step was to review the film and find when the music was played. The track in an excerpted form turned up in the background music playing during the scene with Deckard waiting for a seat at the White Dragon. Layered with other music including “Ogi No Mato”, identifying whether the Miyagi version was the correct one came down to a blind audio test between B5hm, who noted where the excerpt in the film corresponded exactly to the part of the Miyagi track, and DC. When DC independently identified the same part, they both concluded apart from a slight alteration in pitch, this was the correct version. DC began the time consuming process of transferring the track from vinyl to digital media and cleaning the track up, removing over 14,000 audio defects to present the track in its fullest and cleanest version here.
The search still goes on for the alternate blimp track heard as it passes over the Bradbury and during the scene as Deckard hangs from the side of the Bradbury. B5hm’s Japanese source could only identify two words “hito me” literally translates as “person’s eye”....

The EMS Team present here cues taken from the different versions of Blade Runner including previously unreleased flute music and percussion piece.
These pieces were heard in the background during the sushi bar sequence and are presented here for the first time.

'More Human than Human is our motto here at Tyrell'

Sadly EMS aren't superhuman replicants, as you can tell we've been picking things up on the lam as people spot things we've missed. Mainly it's small niggles we've missed but so far everything is going well with the actual music itself. The Japanese tracks were released early as we were getting such an overwhelming response to EMS2011. It's a nice way of us saying thank you to you all for your support. The Lossless version will follow soon..

Some small changes

I posted a new link up yesterday on FFShrine with some minor alterations to the artwork. Catalogue numbers have been added to the spines to allow DC to post the CD set up on Discogs. We never rest in our pursuit of perfection...

A big Thank you

Since we released the 3 disc set on Sunday, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. So far people have expressed their appreciation of the work put in by the EMS team. In turn I would like to say thank you to you who have downloaded it. It's your encouragement that has spurred us on to do something better. This is the result. Once we've all taken a break and DC has finished his own projects, as mentioned before, we will be turning our attention to the Antarctica soundtrack to try and produce an enhanced sound and expanded version. But that is the future...

Sunday, October 2, 2011

You've done a man's job Sir! I guess you're through huh?

With a bit of messing round because of my inexperience with posting on forums, I can proudly say that EMS Recombination 2011 is now live on FFShrine. Thanks to DC for pointing out a small oversight on my part. He has calmed the panicked nerves. Please feel free to comment or give feedback.

Must remember to disable the links next time...

4..5..how to stay alive

I am pleased to announce that I will be posting the mp3 version of the EMS Recombination 2011 on FFshrine in the next 2 hours. Just in the process of sorting the presentation out. I would like to extend my personal thanks again to DC for his perfectionism in sound engineering to make sure this is a signature edition that becomes the reference for others and Jack for for his sterling work on the artwork and Filip for his graciously allowing us to add tracks from his own personal archive to the expanded Japanese disc. The 3 disc set will first be posted in mp3 format, to be followed by the lossless versions. When we post the lossless version the Japanese disc will be posted. It will give us time to make any corrections if DC feels there needs to be any made. I don't think so as this is pretty damned near perfect from all the available sources we've had access to.

Good news

Thank you for all your patience on this our latest project. I am pleased to say that Jack and DC have done a superb job with the EMS2011, especially in the past couple of months due to my workload exploding and poor health. The Japanese disc which they have worked on and expanded from my original concept is a masterpiece. Jack's artwork particularly has surpassed his previous works. I can report that DC is checking the archive for both the mp3 and lossless versions and, barring any 11th hour hitches we should be posting up over this weekend!

EMS Recombination Double CD Case (lossy release)

On a side note, i receive the final EMS Recombination Definitive 3 Disc Edition Lossless copy few days ago and can assure you this project is not a fake.
This project is not simply a compilation of some tracks from available bootlegs  but really a RECOMBINATION!!!
All these tracks have been edited, enhanced, mixed, etc...to give finally all Blade Runner Vangelis Fans a soundtrack with songs in their cleanest form (considering the fact master cues are not available and some cue sources are distorded, etc...)

Some final artworks lossy preview...

As DC said, the masters are ready to be shipped to the "replication plant" in a manner of speaking so we should expect to release the official lossy preview soon on FFShrine, then the lossless deal will follow shortly.
Officially it was supposed to be 3 discs... but as it was mentioned before... I think you'll get "4... no... 2, 2, 4.. .. and noodles"
Noodles being some unreleased japanese music cues that were sampled in the movie...

We're nearly there

Downloaded the lossless version of EMS2011 today and gave final approval for the artwork for both the mp3 and lossless versions. We decided to do different artwork for the different releases. Some of you will be wondering why we are doing both so here's DC to explain it

"Regarding the mp3 release before the lossless is something tied to my young age. :)

If you release a lossless after less of 365 days you will get the release in question deleted from any computer and burned safely onto cd'r without even a cover. More likely those people will burn the cd at 16X (most likely 24X) which means errors in the process and no way to check that since audio data are sort of closed entried. Since most will burn that at speeds more than 4X the burned dye will last no more than four or five years depending on the quality of the media... then we get someone ripping the faulty cd and posting that version around as it did happen with the Esper MR3 or Asian Worlds releases. The mp3 release will go to any ipod and mp3 cdbackups and will stay like that in the years to come... and since it will be us encoding the hell out of it we can control the quality and all the infos to the tag to preserve in time what we have done"

So there you have it.

Shimata-Dominguez Corporation presents...

Apologies

First post in a couple of months. Apologies for all those waiting for the release. Due to my daytime work commitments and poor health on my behalf, things came to a halt a few weeks ago. I can report now that it will be imminent when the EMS 2011 goes live, first as mp3 then lossless. The final text for the Japanese disc has been sent and hope to get that out soon.

Once again sorry for the delay...

FFShrine

Just been over to the FFShrine and found the forums are off line where we will be posting the Definitive 3 Disc version of Blade Runner EMS Recombination. Bugger! On the plus side it will give us the luxury of more time to put a final polish on the sound and the artwork. DC sent me the final work throughs yesterday so I am in the process of listening and checking the sound is OK. Must send the running times to Jack for the booklet.

Early cover design concept art

Here are the concept designs I sent to Jack as a guide to how I envisaged the final look of the original EMS Recombination covers
The text here eventually went on to form part of the project flyer packaed with the finalised art

The back of volume 1 with an early track listing

The back concept for volume 2, sans the tracklisting. Again very rough but enough detail to give Jack some guidelines to work from

The Tyrell logo at one point I was thinking of using as a CD label design, but this eventually got incorporated into the cover inserts as a masthead,

More Images - Vol.2

Final Double CD Insert :

And Alternate Inserts for Fans...

More Images

In the early days of getting the artwork off the ground for the lossless EMS Recombination, Jack and I came up with the following image, primarily to keep a link to the original EMS.
Jack also changed the font from Bank gothic as well too, this had been done to death on the Esper versions.

The next set of covers to come in were these, bearing in mind at the time I was initially thinking we would do a disc set akin to the original EMS release
Then this

and finally this, which we settled on as the image to go on the double cd insert

We may produce a selection of alternate inserts so the fans can chose which version they like.

Booklet Artworks Provisional - PART 2

Update for today. More booklet artworks provisional.

Note:  it's Work In Progress...So tracklisting, images, etc...could change when the EMS Recombination Definitive 3 Disc Edition will be finally released !!!

CD Labels provisional

Thanks again to B5HM for his detailed description...I was able to make some CD Labels for the forthcoming EMS Recombination Definitive 3 Disc Edition !!!

Funny isn't it?

Just been doing a google search to make sure the blogspot came up and discovered another Blade Runner blog about the bootlegs. The blogger there is saying the Chinatown mix is comparable to the EMS Recombination. I wonder if the blogger knew it was the EMS team who worked on it?

Exciting times

Update for today, just finished listening to one of the special tracks DC has been working on. He's cleaned the track up having spent the best part of a week on the job. He's balancing this work against his mother not being very well too and his home life. Given what has been achieved, in the words of Gaff

"You've done a man's job sir"

Welcome to the blog

I hope everyone that comes here from FFshrine and elsewhere will like this new way of keeping people in touch with what the EMS team are doing. I hope to post up things like preliminary artwork, email extracts etc just to give you all an idea of how we've achieved what we have. Oh for anyone who wonders about the memorial at the side, it's our dedication to my little cat Molly who died just as we were starting the project. The original EMS Recombination was dedicated to her memory.

[W.I.P.] EMS Recombination Definitive 3 Disc Edition (2011) - Part 2

2011 started with the release of Blade Runner: EMS Recombination;
A Team effort to create a Blade Runner soundtrack as clean as possible, without F/X and dialogue for fans to enjoy. On its release the soundtrack was well received, spawning numerous other compilations. however the work didn't stop there.

For the lossless release, the EMS Team wanted to offer something a little different and not just repackage the original version.
